Beyond Pills Conference

WHEN: Friday, February 21st, 2025 | 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

WHY: This meeting aims to address the need for improved access to Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) services in BC by expanding the scope of pharmacists. Given the potential for pharmacists to provide contraceptive implant (Nexplanon®) insertion, the meeting seeks to explore how pharmacists can help meet patient demand, particularly in areas with limited access to reproductive health services. By discussing regulatory, training, and logistical requirements, as well as potential barriers, we aim to determine how pharmacists might best be equipped to deliver these services, streamline LARC access, promote collaborative healthcare models, and ultimately enhance contraceptive options for individuals across BC.

WHAT: This provincial innovation planning meeting will convene stakeholders from all health authorities with government and regulators to engage in a comprehensive dialogue about LARC services in BC. The focus will be on the pivotal role of pharmacists to meet the demand for these services and the potential expansion of their scope of practice to include the insertion of subdermal hormonal contraceptive implants (Nexplanon).

Key discussions will explore potential payment mechanisms and workflow impact on pharmacies and pharmacists, and the training and materials needed to support appropriate, effective practice.

WHO: This meeting will convene government, regulatory, health system and health professional organization leaders with pharmacists and sexual health clinicians from urban and rural communities across all health authorities.
