Study Purpose and Methods

The purpose of this study is to identify and address the facilitators and barriers for nurse practitioners’ (NPs) successful initiation and ongoing provision of medical abortion services using mifepristone.

Through multiple time point surveys (baseline and one-year) we will explore the factors influencing medical abortion practice and will recommend policy or service delivery changes with respect to addressable barriers.

Survey respondents will consist of NP’s who provide medical abortion and NP’s not currently providing this service. A subsequent interview with a subgroup of NP survey respondents, as well as key stakeholders, will explore the practice, policy, and social challenges and opportunities facing nurse practitioners who provide mifepristone in Canada.

This study is being funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
